ABOUT
Mary Verspoor is an Indonesian–Dutch designer and artist who has been based in Bali for more than three decades. Her practice moves between sculpture, furniture, and functional art, with a distinctive focus on material, form, and craftsmanship.
Working primarily with reclaimed teak and responsibly sourced tropical hardwoods, Verspoor allows the inherent character of each material to guide the work. Organic forms, tactile surfaces, and hand-carved details reveal the wood’s natural depth, texture, and history. Created in close collaboration with skilled Indonesian artisans, her pieces bring a refined contemporary sensibility to the island’s rich tradition of craftsmanship.
Her Dutch and Indonesian heritage, together with a lifelong engagement with different cultures and environments, informs a practice grounded in both restraint and natural expression. Each work is conceived as a singular object or limited edition, balancing sculptural presence with functionality and enduring material integrity.
With an extensive background in design, furniture, and interiors, Verspoor has presented her work internationally through leading design fairs and galleries. Today, she is dedicated to developing her sculptural and collectible design practice from her studio in Bali.
Her work has been commissioned for distinguished hospitality and residential projects, including Aman Resorts, COMO Shambhala Estate, and Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, and is held in private collections internationally. She is represented by Galerie Philia.
